Será editado el 11 de Febrero y es un homenaje a los guitarristas que Hackett considera que fueron su inspiracion: Bach, Granados, Segovia, Rodrigo...
'Tribute’ is a continuing expression of Steve’s fascination with the classical guitar and an homage to the composers and performers who have inspired him. He is perhaps unique amongst his rock contemporaries as a credible classical player.
Steve has previously recorded a highly acclaimed album of Satie arrangements, and often performs classical pieces live, but Tribute represents his purest engagement with classical music to date.
Steve’s track by track comment on Tribute
Tributes to Bach
1. Gavottes BWV 1012 (Bach)
Two separate pieces edited into one by the maestro Segovia, based on the theme of an ancient dance. Bach’s music has been a personal source of inspiration for years…
2. Courante BWV 1009 (Bach)
A joyful melody, originally written for cello. On guitar and taken at a faster pace it’s one of my favourites.
3. Jesu Joy BWV 147 (Bach)
Quite apart from any religious connotation, in spirit this is a gorgeous lullaby.
A tribute to Segovia
4. The Fountain Suite (Hackett)
What can be said about Andrés Segovia that hasn’t been said already? Let’s just say on the nylon guitar his playing informs my every note! I wrote this as a tribute to his eternal influence.
A tribute to William Byrd
5. The Earle of Salisbury (Byrd)
This glorious short tune was written towards the end of Byrd’s life and although intended for keyboard, sets the guitar ringing from bottom to top…
A tribute to Barrios
6. La Catedral (Barrios)
As the forest was such a form of inspiration to Barrios, The Cathedral could be perceived as homage to nature itself.
A tribute to the unknown writer
7. El Noy de la Mare
A haunting but peaceful traditional Catalan song. I wish I could one day shake the writer’s hand…
A tribute to Rodrigo
8. Cascada (Hackett)
I tried all night to write this but the melody only came the following day when I’d finally given up.
A Tudor Tribute
9. Sapphires (Hackett)
Way back in the sixties this was the first thing I ever managed to complete for solo guitar in ‘early’ music style.
Tributes to Bach
10. Prelude in D, BWV 998 (Bach)
I’ve conducted a survey over time amongst musicians of all types and Bach nearly always comes out on top. When he’s happy he sounds like this…
11. Prelude in C min, BWV 999 (Bach)
Although this piece is barely a minute long, Bach manages to say more than most composers in a lifetime.
12. Chaconne BWV 1004 (Bach)
A commemorative piece dedicated to the memory of Bach’s first wife. This was originally written for solo violin and there have been several arrangements for piano, including one by Brahms. I know I’m biased, but for me it really works best on guitar. When after six minutes he changes from minor to major he’s in a class of his own…
A tribute to Granados
13. La Maja de Goya (Granados)
Transcribed for guitar by Llobet, this Tonadilla, like the portrait it attempts to describe, flirts and beckons until all the elements fuse into an exquisitely captivating theme. To my mind Granados’ passionate work epitomises the soul of Spain.
