Superstar singer and drummer Phil Collins, who had a huge pop hit in 1982 with a cover of the Supremes’ “You Can’t Hurry Love,” now has his sights on more Motown music. Collins told the German newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt today, October 19, that he plans a new CD in 2010 that will feature covers of 30 songs from the Motown label.
”I want the songs to sound exactly like the originals,” he told the paper. Collins, who is 58 and lives in Switzerland, was in Hamburg to celebrate the first anniversary of the debut of the stage musical Tarzan. The show features music Collins composed for the 1999 animated Disney film, including the Oscar-winning ”You’ll Be in My Heart.”
Collins also disclosed that he hasn’t played the drums since April, when he had surgery to repair a dislocated vertebra. Although he says he currently doesn’t have any feelings in his fingers, he is still going on with the Motown CD.
In 2002 Collins delivered Testify, his 10th solo album since his departure from the group Genesis back in 1980. He has won Grammy and Oscar awards for his solo music, which includes such well-known hits as “In the Air Tonight,” “Against All Odds,” “Easy Lover,” “Two Hearts,” “One More Night” and “Another Day in Paradise.”
